SCHOOL MISSION STATEMENT

We are committed to provide each child with the opportunity to develop to his or her potential academically, culturally, spiritually, socially, physically, and emotionally in a Dene-centered environment.

In cooperation with the home and elder's guidance, our school seeks to promote opportunities for whole child development and to foster an understanding and appreciation of each student's individuality.

We believe in promoting basic values of native culture and an appreciation of different cultures and beliefs in society as a way of life. The future of children is foremost in our direction.

John N. A. Janvier

john n.a. janvier

John Norman Albert Janvier was born on January 6, 1939 and began his spirit journey on
February 21, 2023 at the age of 84 years. For decades, Mr. Janvier, shared his profound
knowledge and passion for his Denesuline language, culture and traditions with students at the Cold Lake First Nations LeGoff School.
His tenure as a teacher became a catalyst for transformation, as he imparted not only the
linguistics intricacies but also the cultural richness that lay within each word and expression. He taught Denesuline syllabics, wrote historical documents and stories, authored books and collaborated in producing school materials in Denesuline, teaching the genealogies of the students with family trees, and transforming texts from syllabics to Dene and to English. His commitment to preserving the written and spoken forms of the Dene language stood as a testament to his unwavering devotion to promoting Denesuline.
In recognition of his lifetime efforts, John N.A. Janvier was bestowed an honorary doctorate in Language from the University of Blue Quills. Recently a group of Cold Lake First Nations Elders created a process to rename the former LeGoff School to the John N.A. Janvier School.
